Frameworks

Evaluation frameworks

The framework is the structured development programme your team follows. It determines what athletes are asked each week, how their progress is tracked, and how development evolves across the season.

What is a framework?

A framework is a season-long plan of development themes. It is structured across 48 weeks, divided into phases of four weeks each. In each phase, a different focus area is highlighted within each of the five development categories — Technical, Physical, Psychological, Social, and Personal.

When a coach creates an event, the app automatically calculates which week the event falls in and loads the corresponding evaluation questions for that week. Neither the coach nor the athlete needs to set this manually.

The framework runs in the background, quietly advancing through the season as events are created and evaluations are completed.

From the app: The team admin screen shows your current framework (e.g. "Play 2025 — 48 weeks · 5 categories") with an Explore Framework button that takes you to a full breakdown of every phase.

SHOT Clubhouse offers frameworks across multiple sports. When you create your club and choose your sport, you will see the frameworks available for that sport. The football frameworks below are shown as an example of how they work.

Football — Play 2025

Entry-level framework for young athletes and beginners of any age. Focus areas use accessible, plain language — building the habit of self-reflection through simple, enjoyable evaluation. Ideal for under-9s, under-11s, and any group new to structured development.

48 weeks · 5 categories · Plain-language focus areas

Football — Foundation 2025

Intermediate framework for developing athletes. Builds on the basics with more specific focus on positional awareness, tactical understanding, and team-based thinking. Suited to athletes who have been in structured training for a season or more.

48 weeks · 5 categories

Football — Development 2025

Advanced framework for competitive athletes working on high-performance habits and tactical mastery. Focus areas are more demanding — suited to teenagers and adults in regular competitive football.

How to read the framework screen

Coach

From the team admin screen, tap Explore Framework. This opens a scrollable view of all phases in the framework, with the current phase marked as NOW.

Each phase shows five rows — one per category — with the specific focus area for those four weeks.

Example: Play 2025, Phase 7 (Weeks 25–28)

Phase 7 · Weeks 25–28 · NOW
PhysicalGetting low and strong
PsychologicalBelieving in yourself
SocialMaking training fun for everyone
TechnicalTrying to get the ball
PersonalWanting to get better

Example: Play 2025, Phase 8 (Weeks 29–32)

Phase 8 · Weeks 29–32
PhysicalMoving with power
PsychologicalBouncing back when things go wrong
SocialHelping teammates when it's tough
TechnicalDoing skills when others are near

The same structure repeats throughout the season. Scroll down the Explore Framework screen to see the full season at a glance.

Four-week blocks

Each phase in the framework covers four consecutive weeks. Within that phase, every event created during those four weeks uses the same set of questions — one per category, tied to that phase's focus areas.

The app auto-calculates which week an event falls in when you set the event date. You do not need to track this manually. The current phase is shown on the event creation screen alongside the event date, labelled "Auto-calculated".

From the app: When creating an event, the app shows "Week 25 — Advanced Training Phase" with an Auto-calculated badge. Event date can only be changed within the same week once the event is published — the framework questions are locked in at that point.

Team Focus

Once an event is published and evaluations begin, the parent and athlete views show a Team Focus section at the bottom of the event — listing the four-week phase focus areas for quick reference during the week. This gives athletes and parents a clear, visible anchor for what the team is working on right now.

When to change framework

Coach

You can change your team's framework from team settings at any time. The new framework takes effect from the next event you create.

Reasons to switch framework:

Your squad has moved up an age group
Play 2025 for younger or beginner groups. Foundation 2025 once athletes are comfortable with structured development. Development 2025 for older competitive athletes.
The current framework feels too simple or too demanding
If evaluations are not generating useful feedback — either because the language is too basic or the questions are too advanced — switching framework will recalibrate the focus areas to a more appropriate level.
New season
At the start of a new season, review whether the framework still matches your squad. Moving from Play to Foundation is a natural progression for a group that has completed a full season.
Existing evaluations are not affected. Changing the framework does not alter or delete previous evaluations. Historical scores remain in place. Only new events from that point use the updated framework.

Which framework to choose

A quick guide for common squad types:

Under-9s, under-11s, or any group new to development tracking
Start with Play 2025. The language is accessible, the focus areas are straightforward, and it builds the habit of self-reflection without overwhelming young athletes.
Under-13s to under-16s with some experience
Use Foundation 2025. The questions introduce more specific technical and tactical thinking without being inaccessible.
Older teens, adult athletes, or competitive groups
Use Development 2025. The focus areas are demanding and performance-oriented — matched to athletes who are ready to engage with them honestly.
Not sure? Start one level lower than you think — it is always easier to step up a framework than to step down after athletes have already formed expectations. Play 2025 is the safest starting point for any group you are unsure about.
